Campo Nado: Where the Poor Live: August 2, 1999

I've heard talk about the poor people living "in the swamp."  Campo Nado (Nado is the surname of the man who used to own the property) is one of those places.  Not knowing where these people lived, I had been asking folks to take me out there.  There was a mission team on Utila for a few days (after working on the island of Roatan) that wanted to go.  I tagged along as fellow pastorWilson Howell (Church of God) led us through Campo Nado.

Campo Nado This really is swamp.  People have built walkways out to their homes.  Note the utility pole.  Electrification is on the way.  Sanitation is my biggest concern...

Used lumber is purchased or scavenged from other projects on the island.

Campo Nado

Campo Nado The further out you go, the more ramshackle the buildings (and the walkways).  Pastor Howell found no one at home at this house this morning. (Most people were working.)

Money is not the first ministry need in Campo Nado.  Pastor Howell said that handouts quickly foster one-sided relationships; people see you simply as a ticket to what they need.  Time invested in real relationships would bear more fruit.

The team (mostly youth) went door to door inviting people to the clinic and to open air services to be held three evenings.  (The open air services were excellent, by the way.  Music by a Christian artist from Roatan, drama by the team and preaching.) Campo Nado

Campo Nado Team members offered to pray for residents from house to house.  Many took them up on the offer.
