Journal Entry for Sunday, July 18, 1999

Some folks asked about the earthquake we experienced last Sunday, July 11.  (Hard to imagine I'd forget to put that in my journal but I did!)  Not everyone hear felt it, but I did.  It was about 8:15a.m.  I was sitting down when I felt a gentle shaking and heard things rattling.  I ran out to the kitchen where Miss Iris & Co. were preparing a meal for the Broadmoor team.  I asked if Utila experienced earthquakes or tremors.  She said they did though she did not feel that one.  I was aware of it for only about 15 seconds.  It was centered several hundred miles away, in Guatemala.  If you want to read more about it see

I did my first funeral this week.  American Hal Polaire who was married to a Mizpah Methodist Church member died Sunday morning July 11 at 6:30a.m.  The funeral was the next day.  Funeral customs vary from culture to culture.  You can read my account of

We received a work team from Broadmoor UMC of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  They did some repair work on our annex and hosted a Vacation Bible School in the annex and a basketball clinic on the court at the Seventh Day Adventist School.  Check out the pictures of some fine folks at work (and at play).
