Much has happened since the December 20 fire destroyed Henderson's Store.
As soon as the insurance adjuster inspected the site, volunteers pitched in to clean out the debris. Several loads were taken to the dump. |
In just one day the store was cleared. Since then roofing material has been knocked down into the store but it does not pose the health hazard that the rotting food would have. |
The Hendersons have opened a temporary store across the street from the burned out store. Henderson's Next opened Thursday, December 30, ten days after the fire. It's named Henderson's Next after Archie Jr's typical call for the next customer, "Next!" (Incidentally, that's Archie Jr sitting on the porch.) A number of food items have been scarce since the fire; prices have risen too. Hopefully the new temporary store will alleviate some of the shortages. |
The insurance company advertised this week that they have paid
the claim on the loss of the store. There is no insurance for liability,
however, and Archie Henderson, an active member of our church, is liable
for the considerable cost of medical care to the victims. Several of you
have ties to the island through friends, family or church connections. If
you or your church would like to help defray the cost of caring for the victims,
checks may be made payable to Mizpah Methodist Church and mailed
to

Please continue to pray for
Guadalupe Jackson
Casandra Jackson (age 4)
Anita Jackson (age 12)
Guadalupe and her children were moved from San Pedro Sula to
the burn unit in Tegucigalpa on Saturday, January 8. Casandra is responding
well. Her legs were badly burned and doctors have been focusing on making
sure she has full range of motion in her knees. Anita is having difficulty
with the one leg that was very badly burned. We're hoping that the move to
this new unit will encourage Guadalupe in applying herself to the difficult
work of rehabilitation; she had a rough time of it in San Pedro Sula.
Nidia Lino Chimilio
Nidia was moved to the burn unit of the hospital in Tegucigalpa
on Friday, December 24. She has made excellent progress and is able to walk
again, first with a walker, then crutches and now by helping herself along
the wall.
Rosa Castro
Ernesto Castillo (age 7)
Rosa Castro is back on Utila. Her son Ernesto is out of the
hospital and staying with his grandmother in La Ceiba.
Remember also
the family and friends of Josué Medina, who died
December 22,
the families and friends of the other victims,
and the Henderson family.
