    UMCC Teachers Residence Being Planned

The Utila Methodist Community College Board has been hoping to build a teachers residence for some time now. Housing is expensive on Utila; the school provides it for teachers who move from other places to teach here.

The Board was delighted when Mr. Jim Needham began talking to the architecture school at Ball State University (Muncie, Indiana) about doing plans for the teachers residence. Mr. Stacy Norman, assistant professor of architecture was on the island for several days. During his time here Stacy checked out the UMCC site, looked at different types of architecture on the island and spoke with building material suppliers.

On Tuesday, January 4, Stacy probed the board for information on desired design and amenities to be included in the facility. The conversation among Stacy and the board members was excellent. During the spring semester Ball State students will do a combined design/research studio on our Teachers Residence. As the semester progresses the student teams will be in contact with the Board for input. Plans and a materials list will be made available by the end of the semester. Volunteer help will then be solicited to build the facility.

Stacy was our guest at the mission house during his visit. He also got in a little SCUBA diving along with work while here!
