    Airport Improvement

In my opinion Utila was overdue for some work on its runway. The work is now underway. As this relatively minor work is finished, construction of the new airport is being undertaken by the same crew. The new runway will be out near Pumpkin Hill. It will be longer and paved, I'm told. One advantage for cyclist Jeff is that a new road is being constructed to the site of the new airport. Another place to ride my bicycle!

Offloading heavy equipment A good sized ship offloads the heavy equipment right at the airport. One piece was almost lost to the swampy area on which it was put ashore.

A nice assortment of graders, rollers, etc. parked at the terminal building.

Grading and widening the landing strip The runway is much flatter now and wider too. An islander watching the work said it had been six or seven years since the runway was graded.

Our airport has no tower; pilots land by visual flight rules (VFR). I'm guessing that this giant white "X" at the end of the runway means "don't land now."  "No fly zone" while work is in progress
