    Changes on Utila

Some changes have taken place on Utila since we returned from our 11 days away March 31.

Speed Limit on Utila?!? Speed limit signs have appeared throughout town. We don't know if they'll slow down the speeding trucks, motorcycles and ATV's or not. Jill and I were both stunned when we witnessed a pickup truck use its turn signal the other night. A change for the better!

(25 kilometers per hour = 15 miles per hour)

A sad change... The prettiest portion of Big Bight, one of our favorite areas to bicycle to, has been surrounded by barbed wire fence. We can foresee the day when Utilians will no longer have access to the beautiful areas of the island due to private development. Hard to know who to blame though. It's Utilians who are selling the land for development. We wish that some would be purchased for public access. Don't fence me out...

New business across the street The Utila Cafe opened today in this recently renovated house across the street from the Mission House. The cafe was denied a liquor license, the first we've heard of such a decision and an answer to prayer. They play not too loud music and serve ice cream (the first to do so on the island) and other dessert treats as well as tacos and baked potatoes. With no loud drunken tourists or music they're making good neighbors!
