    Top Ten Reasons to Ring in the New Millenium on Utila

There is anxiety in the world over the Y2K problem. Folks here are concerned as well. While economic disruptions anywhere can affect us on Utila, we've come up with a top ten list of reasons why it might be advantageous to spend New Year's Eve on the island.

10. Zero risk of air traffic control failure
      No air traffic control; VFR (Visual Flight Rules) only

  9. ATM's will not break down
      No ATM's on Utila

  8. Nuclear plant meltdown
      No nuclear plants in Honduras

  7. No loss of utility service
      Utility employee manually starts generator each day at 6:00a.m.

  6. No failure of traffic signals
      No traffic signals on Utila

  5. No fear of military attack caused by computer failure
      Honduras possesses no long range strategic weapons;
      Honduras considered major world threat by no other nation

  4. No failure of grocery store checkout scanners
      Henderson's Store doesn't have scanners

  3. Computerized gas pump failure not a problem
      Gasoline is sold a gallon at a time, hand pumped

  2. No fear of panic in the streets at midnight due to power failure
      The power always goes off at midnight.
