United Methodist Volunteers in Mission to CUBA

March 16 - 28, 1998

Our team of 12 traveled to visit and work alongside the churches of Tallahassee's sister district, the Central District of the Methodist Church in Cuba.  Our work project was to participate in the building of Camp Canaan near Miller.  We were mightily blessed to worship in 12 churches while in the country.  Our brothers and sisters in Christ welcomed us warmly everywhere we went.

Camp Canaan The first four dormitories of Camp Canaan are well underway.

Iron girders are up for the meeting hall, dining hall and kitchen complex. A large part of our work: Fill in the foundation with the piles of dirt surrounding the foundation.

Pastor Jefe digs right in. (Note that Jefe is the most stylin' worker present. Cuba will never be the same!)

The church at Aguada de Pasajeros, pastored by the District Superintendent Maria Alberta Perez Lemus.

I was invited to preach at Aguada de Pasajeros.

The church at Yaguaramas, 100 years old.  It has suffered extreme termite damage. They hope to rebuild. (This is the sister church of Saint Paul's under the Cuba-Florida Covenant.)

Kraft paper hides the termite damage inside the church at Yaguaramas.

What the church in Cuba lacks in the material realm it more than makes up for in spiritual wealth.  The apostle Paul urged churches with abundance to help those who were in need. Would his word be any different to us today?  I am indebted to the church in Cuba for sharing with me their considerable wealth.  And they continue graciously to share with us in their sister churches as they pray for us and our work here.

I do not mean that there should be relief for others and pressure on you, but it is a question of a fair balance between your present abundance and their need, so that their abundance may be for your need, in order that there may be a fair balance. As it is written,
“The one who had much did not have too much,
and the one who had little did not have too little.”

2 Corinthians 8:13-15
